On a Thursday evening, 4 August 2011, Pieter Vorster representing the open money development group visited the Comox Rotary Club by invitation to present the concept of open money according to the community way model.
Following a delicious dinner by local Gourmet Chef Dawn McCrae the third and final of the Comox Valley’s rotarian societies settled in to see what community way dollars are all about.
You can view more information on how the model works by watching this video clip on YouTube and hear (more or less) what the audience did at the presentation. The short 5-minute introduction and explanation was followed by a series of questions from the audience, which Pieter answered to the best of his knowledge and abilities.
The response from the audience was very positive, with...

On Wednesday, 27 July 2011, Michael Linton and Pieter Vorster from the open money development group, accompanied by Eduardo Uranga, joined the Strathcona-Sunrise Rotary to present the group with more information about open money, and specifically the community way model. Everyone agreed that the idea was favourably received and there were plenty of enthusiastic questions from the crowd. Below is a copy of the club’s newsletter, which outlines the presentation on page 2 (so scroll down in the document, even better, click on the fullscreen icon).

This is looking great, I am really excited to start working on developing open money again. The progress from when I was last actively working with open money is really encouraging. Congratulations to the crew that pushed so far, and I look forward to finding more time to help in the development process. I am a bit behind the times and will be spending some time in the valley working with OMdev to find out where I best fit. The web presence is impressive, openmoney.org reinforces the concept and the progress of systems in development are nicely represented by this site (communityway.ca) for the Comox Valley, communitydollars.ca for the Kootenay project and after this weekend the group behind villagevancouver.ca in Vancouver will be gearing up to start a model of their own. Just to put a...

An excellent article on cw$ by Diana van Eyk on the Transition Kootenays blog. Exciting to see the folks from Nelson getting behind open money this way.
The best part is:
“We plan to roll this new currency out in January, 2011, and hope you will join us, whether you’re a business, non-profit, charity or citizen. We have nothing to lose and everything to...

As some of you may know, a big part of what we are trying to do with the Comox Valley Community Way initiative is to promote the use of open money.
What is open money?
To quote the first sentence from openmoney.org
“Open money is a means of exchange freely available to all. Any community, any association – indeed, any body – can have their own money.
The purpose of the open money project is to bring together and organize the people and resources necessary for the development and propagation of open money everywhere.”
Why use open money?
Because it is good for community and good for business.
Because it allows us all to remember that money is little more than a means of attributing value between ourselves e.g. John builds Mike a new kitchen table, John...

Make a difference that counts.
Buy cw$ at Surecopy (1255-A Cliffe Ave) and the Broken Spoke Coffee and Bike Shop (#1-420, Fitzgerald Ave) in Courtenay. More xchange locations coming soon in Comox and Cumberland.
You can support any of the organizations and projects listed on this site by buying cw$ from them – they get the cash they need to do their work and you get cw$ you can spend in the businesses that are supporting the community.
It’s win, win, win – the community gets working cash, you get spending money, the business gets customers.
